The Office of Inspector General, headed by Inspector General Wilbert Van Marsh, a 31-year veteran of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, is charged with uncovering waste, fraud and abuse and oversees the Detroit Public Schools Police Department.
Van Marsh, who was the district’s Deputy Inspector General-Investigations prior to heading that office, served as Assistant to the Special Agent in Charge for the Federal Air Marshal Service – Department of Homeland Security from 2002 to 2007. In that role, he supervised, mentored, trained and developed a squad of 22 Air Marshals in the Detroit Field Office.
The DPS Office of Inspector General has opened nearly 400 investigations since March of 2009, when the Office was formed, and has a closure rate of more than 70 percent in the areas of Theft, Payroll Fraud, Contractor Fraud, Abuse, Ethics Violations, Unauthorized Employment, Vendor Fraud and Waste.
The Office of Inspector General promotes integrity and credibility in the District by conducting audits, investigations and reviews to detect and prevent waste, fraud and abuse, as well as identify opportunities for improving efficiency and effectiveness of internal controls.
