“Today I pledge to be the best I can possibly be… Today I pledge to believe in me!”
Every morning at Samuel Gompers Elementary-Middle School, the microphone is handed to the Gompers Broadcast Team, an energetic group of students who do not skip a beat on updating the school with current weather conditions, sports statistics, and of course the word of the day. At Gompers, it is evident that students are taking charge of their futures.
With focus and dedication, the ‘GEM’ has been unveiled (Gompers Elementary-Middle)
There are three main points that staff focus on, says Principal Bobbie Posey-Milner. Those points are teaching, learning and the child. With more than 900 students who attend Gompers, Posey-Milner says she strives to create a learning community that has a laser-like focus to help students reach the next level in their academic careers.

The new $21.4 million building opened in the Brightmoor neighborhood in 2011 on the site of the former Harding Elementary School on the city’s west side. Classrooms designed for art and science programs are located on the first floor of the middle school wing. Gompers also offers music courses and a choir.
The new $21.4 million school opened in the Brightmoor neighborhood in 2011 on the site of the former Harding Elementary School on the city’s west side. The 111,882-square-foot school consolidated and replaced three older buildings: Harding, Vetal and Gompers elementary schools. Harding Elementary School and an annex building on the campus were demolished for construction of the new LEED Silver Certified two-story facility that combines preschool students through grade 8 under one roof. A gymnasium, central administration suite, and multi-purpose room separate the PreK-5 and middle school wings.
Classrooms designed for art and science programs are located on the first floor of the middle school wing. The second story houses general classroom space and two academic commons rooms with large windows for natural lighting. Students in preschool through second grade are located on the first floor of the elementary wing with grades 3-5 on the second floor.
