About Us

Fisher Magnet Lower Academy is a unique early elementary facility, the only one of its kind in DPS, and is renowned for its beautiful, spacious campus. It is a local choice for families with siblings serving students from PreK to Grade 4. We partner with the Detroit Recreation Department and Fisher Magnet Upper Academy (5th – 8th Grades), to offer a full service educational campus. Strong student-teacher-parent relationships focus on the individual needs of each child. Fisher Lower offers a variety of subjects including Art, Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Vocal Music and Physical Education. Our classrooms include laptops, State-of-the-Art Smart Boards, projectors, document cameras, computers and tablets. We have enhanced our curriculum with The Flying Classroom supplemental S.T.E.M. program that was designed by Captain Barrington Irving, an African American and the youngest person to fly around the world in a self-built plane. Fisher Magnet Lower Academy is going Full Steam Ahead in all areas of our curriculum. Get on board for an engaging learning experience!

Our Mission

The mission of Fisher Magnet Lower Academy is to differentiate instruction to produce high achievement. The Name We Honor

Dorothy Louise Fisher is a retired educator from Detroit Public Schools. She has two degrees from Wayne State College of Education, a bachelor’s (1944) and a master’s (1948). In the course of her career, Ms. Fisher taught at the Goodale Elementary School, was Assistant Principal at the Hillger and Clark Schools, and became Principal at Clark Elementary School. She was also the Principal at the Region 7 Magnet Middle School, which is now known as Fisher Magnet Upper Academy Middle School.

Although she retired, she continued to contribute her educational talent as a volunteer by teaching reading to adults. Dorothy L. Fisher began Region 7 Middle School in 1971, which was one of the eight Magnet Schools that began the formal application process for Magnet Schools in Detroit.
