Offering an outstanding bilingual transitional program within a rigorous, college-preparatory program so every student shines

Roberto Clemente Learning Academy is a Neighborhood-Centered, Quality School for Grades Pre-Kindergarten to 5, offering an outstanding bilingual transitional program within a rigorous, college-preparatory program so every student can shine.

Roberto Clemente Learning Academy’s highly qualified, experienced staff offers outstanding educational opportunities that create an atmosphere to challenge every student to excel. Many staff members, including the principal, are bilingual.

The school, located in a new building constructed in 2001, offers students a variety of experiences that go beyond the core academic courses to build a well-rounded learner, including Music, Extended Day, Physical Education and soccer, as well as 21st century technology such as SMARTboards and a modernized computer lab.

Musical opportunities include Band, Choir and Chimes.

Roberto Clemente Learning Academy is driven by the belief that, with appropriate instruction and time, every student can meet the State’s Academic Standards and become an academic All-Star. Physical and emotional safety is essential for a productive learning environment. Parents and school staff are partners in the education of our students. The school-wide reform strategy is designed to implement Response to Intervention using the Michigan’s Integrated Behavior and Learning Support Initiative framework.

Outstanding Graduation Pathways and Door-step transportation to the award-winning Clippert Academy

Roberto Clemente’s staff believes that every child should be able to envision their path to high school, college and careers from the moment they set foot in the building.

Siblings of students who attend Roberto Clemente Academy have an outstanding opportunity to take a FREE shuttle bus daily to the renowned, award-winning Clippert Academy Middle School for grades 6, 7 and 8. The shuttle stops at Clemente every morning to pick up students and returns after Clippert’s day ends.

Student who attend Clemente will also have the academic foundation to ensure a successful transition to high school at Western International High School and other high-achieving schools. Western is the most culturally diverse comprehensive high school in the Detroit Public School district. Whether students choose the STEM Academy for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or International Business Academy, the Fine and Performing Arts Academy, or enter into the 9th Grade Ambassador Academy, they will learn self-management skills, learning/study skills, and social skills.

The $28.3 million Western International High School renovation in 2011 included a new athletic complex with a swimming pool addition and an exercise facility. The existing pool was filled in and the space was converted into the visual and performing arts wing which includes a black box theater, two dance studios, language laboratories, and art classrooms in addition to a cultural center to serve as a community marketplace.  A new building security entrance was added to incorporate state-of-the-art security technologies, enhance student safety, and foster a greater connection between the community and administrative offices.

Parent and Family Engagement Matter

Clemente has an investment in parents and families because the staff knows that students excel when parents are more engaged in their children’s learning. Clemente frequently creates events to encourage parent engagement. Those include Monthly Parent Meetings, Curriculum Family Nights, Open House, Field Trips, Student Performance Programs Math and Science Family Nights, Reading Month VIP Readers Day, Awards, Rewards, Fund Raising and volunteering.

The parent organization holds monthly parent meetings that are well-attended. During the monthly meetings parents fill out surveys to express their students’ needs. Input from parents and community organizations are valued and are a critical component for student achievement.

Parents are also members of the school improvement team in the school, as well as active community participants. All staff members within the school work with the parent organization.   Clemente has a welcoming Parent Room and a school social worker to assist students and families with their needs.

There is always someone who speaks Spanish to assist families at Roberto Clemente Academy.

ESL for Parents!

At Clemente, the staff knows that parents need to learn, too. That’s why Clemente is adding courses so that parents can student English as a Second Language (ESL).

Our Name

Our school is named in honor of the Puerto Rican Baseball Legend Roberto Clemente, being a right fielder who was a batting champ of the National League (1961, 1964, 1965 and 1967) and a Gold Glove winner for defensive ability 12 times. Clemente, who had 3000 hits in his major league career, died in a plane crash in 1972. Clemente has been transporting supplies to victims of a Nicaraguan earthquake, where he had lost many friends. According to his biography, Clemente dreamed of creating a sports center for the young athletes, especially disadvantaged youth,  of Puerto Rico. he hoped to teach children that hard work and personal integrity could help them achieve success, and he is a perfect role model for our students.
