Education of Homeless Children and Youth Program

Vision

We believe that every child who is homeless will have the same opportunities as children who have a fixed and permanent living environment. In addition to this we believe that the Detroit Public Schools district will be the national model for providing services to homeless children and youth in school.

Mission

Our mission is to advocate for homeless children and youth. We will also educate our peers and all stakeholders on the McKinney-Vento laws and the responsibility of the district to uphold these laws. Our goal is to insure that all children, regardless of their living situation will receive a quality education.

The Homeless Program started in 1990, with one staff person serving this population. Over the course of 17 years, the staff has grown to 5 persons, including 4 School Social Workers, and one School Social Work Supervisor. In the 2006-2007 school year, the unit served 3,500 students.
