Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)

Who needs a FBA/BIP?

When a student with a disability exhibits problematic behavior that:

  1. Interferes with his/her own learning or that of others, or
  2. Is dangerous or potentially dangerous, or
  3. Results in removal from school for more than 10 cumulative school days in a school year, the need for a Functional Behavioral Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan should be considered.

The FBA is a team process involving teachers, aides, parents, administrators, School Social Workers, and others who work with the student. Instructional staff can receive assistance from a behavior specialist in conducting the functional behavior assessment and developing the behavior intervention plan.
