Posted July 14, 2009

Two Detroit Public Schools students got the surprise of a lifetime Monday when they learned Emergency Financial Manager Robert C. Bobb would like them to accompany him to see President Barack Obama speak at Macomb County Community College. The students are: Anthony Richard, 10, who will be a fifth grader at Loving Elementary. Teachers regularly refer to him as "the next valedictorian." He loves basketball and math. Ireona Careton, 16, who is going to be a junior at Mumford. She, too, loves basketball and carries a 3.8 grade point average, her foster mother, Michelle Alston, said. Ireona is a kid who "beat the odds," Alston said. Ireona's biological mother was killed at age 17 and Ireona has been in foster care most of her life.
