At Brewer Elementary School, the students dress for success, in uniform, much as the children did who formerly occupied their building. Brewer was established in the former Guardian Angels Catholic School in 1987which makes it one of the younger schools in the District. The dress code fits well with the school mission of creating a learning community that promotes academic excellence. It helped them to reach the payoff.
- In just one year, the school went from AYP phase 5 to AYP phase 0
- The students have been ranked in the top 10 schools in the District with the highest achievement gains in Math
- The school was invited to apply for a ‘Good Schools’ grant from the Skillman Foundation because of the 2007 MEAP scores
Those accomplishments can only be made when a school offers a core curriculum that is interesting to the students and entices them to learn. Brewer boasts a state-of-the-art Library and Multi Media room and computer lab, a science fair, after school tutoring, use of technology in the curriculum, accelerated math and reading, and family involvement in the learning process.
But Brewer is also a school that nurtures and develops the creative side of children. Brewer students placed 1st and 2nd in the 71st Annual Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition and 1st in the Wayne County Community College Art Exhibition. They were also champions in Academic Games competitions.
Along with the daily classroom work, the administration has expanded the school’s teaching reach to include programs that build character, teach responsibility and respect, and help children develop on many levels such as:
- Sports
- Safety Patrol
- Special Needs services
- Summer Camp
- Enrichment activities
- Student Of The Month awards
Collectively, the academic accomplishments at Brewer have made the school family very proud and made the school an attractive environment for learning for any child.
Historical Note: The school is named after the first African American principal in the Detroit Public Schools, Beulah Cain Brewer. The State of Michigan has declared January 15th as Beulah Brewer Day.
The school’s mascot is the Bumble Bee and the colors are black and gold.
