Howe Elementary School
Howe Elementary School has risen to the status as one of the premier elementary schools within the Detroit Public Schools. This well-kept secret is out as last fall’s MEAP scores show that Howe surpassed all of the DPS school averages in all areas tested, and exceeded the State averages in writing at all three grade levels.
Students at Howe Elementary are part of a learning community that offers a variety of enriching activities. Each classroom is equipped with a wireless laptop to aid in learning. Students can participate in programs such as the Annual Spelling Bee, the Annual Winter, Spring and Black History Programs, and more! Howe students have been the recipient of several awards including being named winners in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest. In 2002, Howe was the recipient of the Golden Apple Award. The staff at Howe also realize that a parent are a vital part of the learning process and equips them with skills to help their children succeed with support such as a resource center just for parents and by offering parent MEAP workshops!
Strong staff commitment to academic excellence has led Howe students to achieving Adequate Yearly Progress for three consecutive years! 12% of Howe’s teachers are currently working towards their national teaching certification. Howe Elementary was rebuilt in 2002 from the School Bond Fund and is located on Detroit’s Eastside.
