Greetings DPSCD Families,
Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) remains committed to providing the highest quality education and support to all students. There is a national critical shortage impacting our ability to provide continuous specialized services in select areas to students requiring school-based ancillary support. School districts nationwide report challenges in recruiting and hiring support services, including school social workers, school psychologists, speech and language pathologists, occupational therapists, and physical therapists.
We continue to actively seek solutions to address this issue, including the exploration of expanding our number of contracting agencies, virtual resources, and the provision of compensatory services. While we are working diligently to mitigate the impact of this shortage, it is essential for you, as parents and guardians, to be aware of the efforts we are making to ensure your child’s needs are met.
Please join us for our monthly Parent Advisory Council (PAC) Meeting on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, where we will further discuss this issue.
The meeting will be held via Microsoft Teams and can be accessed using this link.
For more information on PAC and future meetings, please visit Parent Toolbox / Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) (detroitk12.org).
Office of Exceptional Student Education
-
Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) provides students with exceptional needs with the support, interventions, and enrichment activities needed to flourish. The Office of Exceptional Student Education encompasses all learners outside of the typical learning environment and those that may require differing learning styles in order to meet their full potential. The ESE department is comprised of Section 504 students, students with, or suspected of having, a disability, and Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). We work to ensure students have access to and the opportunity to participate in the varied opportunities DPSCD provides.
This access to instructional and other support services will result in every student maximizing their potential to successfully participate in school, work, and community life.
