Candidate must have Certificate of Documentation of Michigan State level screening – QA II or QA III. Also, the educational interpreter must show evidence of at least one of the following: (a) Certificate of Interpreting, Certificate of Transliteration, comprehensive Skills Certificate and/or Oral Interpreting Certificate from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), (b) NAD certification of IV or above, (c) Transcript or documentation of completion of an interpreter training program from an appropriate college or university or equivalent i.e. experience. Candidate must obtain state Educational Interpreter Performance Assessment (EIPA) certificate (EIPA) by end of school year (6-30-2009).
Documentation of at least 3 years of successful experience as an educational interpreter or the acquisition of sign language as a native language.
Regular Attendance is critical; must have an exemplary attendance record.
Must be able to verify whether U.S. citizen, resident alien, or otherwise authorized to accept employment in the U.S.
Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations.
Under the direction of the Supervisor, Deaf and Hard of Hearing the Educational Technician will:
a. The Detroit Public Schools Program follows a Total Communication approach with the communication mode meeting the students’ needs. Knowledge of the following communication modes is preferred: American Sign Language, Pidgin Signed English, Signed Exact English (using conceptually correct ASL signs), Oral/speech reading, Tactile, Low Vision and minimal language skills/gesturing.
b. Interpret/transliterate for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, their peers and instructors in the mainstream, self contained academic, special subject or vocational classes including but not limited to lectures, conversations, videos, and special projects.
c. Interpret and/or transliterate according to the specifications of the student’s Individualized Educational Program.
d. Participate as a member of the educational team related to the student’s communication abilities and needs as requested by teacher, administrator or parent.
e. Interpret at meetings, conferences and workshops for parents and staff who are deaf or hard-of-hearing upon request by school administrator, supervisor or teacher.
f. Set up the physical setting for the most successful interpretation (e.g. determining the best physical arrangement for the interpreter in relation to the teacher’s presentation style and movement within the classroom, working with the teacher to accommodate lighting needs during movies, filmstrips, etc.)
g. Utilize planning time to meet with teachers and staff as deemed appropriate by the educational team and/or the supervisor.
h. Be prepared for demanding course material as necessary for successful interpreting and/or transliterating.
i. Demonstrate professionalism in all interactions with administrators, teachers, and staff, with parents and students, and with visitors or individuals unfamiliar with the educational setting.
j. Demonstrate professionalism in all ethical areas, especially in applying the Code of Ethics to the educational setting.
k. Interpret for school functions and assemblies outside the classroom during regularly scheduled school hours.
l. Be available to interpret for after school activities upon request.
m. Attend all district inservices as requested by supervisor.
n. Maintain a QAIII endorsement at all times.
o. Maintain an excellent attendance pattern.
p. Follow board policies regarding notification of absence and tardiness.
q. Maintain an accurate log of daily activities and students serviced.
You must provide a non-refundable payment of $65.25 by cashier's check, certified check or money order, payable to the I.I.S. (Identix Identification Services).

Please be prompt when arriving at the fingerprinting site. In order to be fingerprinted, you must present your state issued picture ID or passport, the completed LiveScan Fingerprint Request form, the completed Identix Michigan Fingerprint Applicant Information form, as well as the fingerprint fee of $65.25.
All fingerprinting appointments will be scheduled by Detroit Public Schools, Human Resources Department.
