The Detroit Public Schools’ goal is to create a “world-class” school district for students and committed teachers who demonstrate a passion for teaching and learning, have exceptional content knowledge in their certification area, have a strong belief in student-centered learning and hold high expectations for performance for ALL students.

We are looking for teachers who exemplify the five core propositions for high quality teaching from which the national standards for quality teaching are derived;

• Teachers are committed to students and their learning

• Teachers know the subject they teach and HOW to teach the subject to students

• Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring student learning

• Teachers think systematically about their practice and learn from experience

• Teachers are members of learning communities.

Detroit Public Schools teachers must be committed to demonstrating teacher leadership, active participation in a professional learning community, and collaboration as the framework for effective instructional planning and delivery. Teachers must be prepared and willing to work with students on rigorous learning projects. Teachers must be able to respond effectively to the individual needs of their students by having a vast repertoire of instructional strategies at their command. Mastery of inquiry learning, cooperative learning, project-based and other constructivist active learning techniques is required.

Teachers must be able to go beyond minimum high stakes test requirements and standardized tests to develop assessments that are content rich, performance based and connected to competencies and values beyond the school. Teachers must work collaboratively to develop performance assessment systems that allow students and teachers to assess their work using multiple indicators and measures thereby fostering a continuous improvement cycle. As part of the faculty, teachers will be an integral part of creating a strong accountability system, having their work viewed by a variety of partners, providing a shared body of information based on action research that not only informs their own work but can be replicated elsewhere.
