Qualifications

Education:

Applicants must possess and provide evidence of a Master's Degree in Business Administration, Accounting or Finance from an accredited college/university. Course work should reflect systematic study in at least two (2) of the following: Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, and Information Technology. A Bachelor's Degree and three (3) years directly related experience may be considered in lieu of the Master's Degree.

Experience:

Must present evidence of a minimum of four (4) years of full-time work experience in a computerized accounting environment. Familiarity with computer hardware and software accounting applications preferred. Knowledge in Microsoft Excel is a must. Experience managing and accounting for State, Federal and municipal grant funds preferred. Also must present evidence of at least one of the following: audit preparation responsibilities, financial statement preparation, fixed assets management, grants management/federal single audit compliance and vendor payments.

Attendance:

Regular Attendance is critical; must have an exemplary attendance record.

Citizenship:

Must be able to verify whether U.S. citizen, resident alien, or otherwise authorized to accept employment in the U.S.

Physical Condition:

Must be physically able to perform the duties and responsibilities outlined with or without accommodations.


Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Principal Accountant will:

Essential Functions:

� Assist in the preparation of periodic and annual financial statements;

� Prepare other interim and annual financial reports to be submitted to the District and various governmental agencies;

� Assist with the preparation of the comprehensive annual financial report, including the capital assets section;

� Maintain communications and rapport with personnel in other departments and divisions;

� Reconcile general ledger accounts and prepare journal entries as required.

� Maintain district-prescribed records of all financial transactions;

� Assist in conducting of special studies and analyses;

� Responds to vendors regarding discrepancies, problems, or related matters and resolves vendor problems;

� Process payments in settlement of debts incurred by the Detroit Public Schools;

� Train and supervise subordinates, if applicable;

� Supervise and manage and payments to vendors;

� Prepare on-going vendor reports required for making payment decisions on a weekly, monthly or quarterly basis as required;

� Utilize computer-driven practices for recording and maintaining financial records;

� Completes district-prescribed ledgers;

� Prepare monthly bank reconciliation;

� Fulfill other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer /Designee.
