- DPS students district-wide scored record gains on the MEAP Test, outpacing statewide progress in 14 out of 18 assessments! And Detroit Public Schools’ high school graduation rate increased five percentage points for 2012, bringing the rate to 64.74 percent, the highest rate since 2006, while closing the gap with statewide rates by greater than three percentage points.

- Golightly Education Center goes green! Preschool students and their middle school colleagues harvested their garden on Thursday, November 29 as part of “Go Green” Week. The students picked dinosaur kale, and made the leaves into kale chips. Many of the students had never before tried kale and said they enjoyed the hands-on learning using math and science!

- The students of the Detroit Public Schools’ Munger Pre-K to 8 School on October 12 hosted the Nation’s 18th Surgeon General, Dr. Regina Benjamin. Dr. Benjamin joined students for a healthy lunch that included Michigan-grown acorn squash and led the community in a “Surgeon General’s Walk” around the school.

- The 2012 DPS Annual Back-to-School Parade, presented by Internet Essentials from Comcast, was held on Wednesday, August 22. The Parade, which had the most units of any parade to date in the City of Detroit, stepped off at 11 a.m. at Grand Circus Park, Woodward at Adams, downtown.

- About 50 Bennett Elementary School students attended Navy Week events downtown Wednesday. Students who are mentored by the Hispanic Police Officers Association went aboard the ships to meet the crew. The activity was in conjunction with the school’s Social Studies curriculum, in which students learn about careers, positive choices, conflict resolution and leadership.

Detroit Public Schools is creating Centers of Excellence in every school in every neighborhood. The district’s primary mission is educating students to perform at high academic levels. DPS offers educational advantages to students and parents/guardians across the system reforms throughout the district’s 100 schools. Those include:
- $106 million in student grants and scholarships
- 3 new state-of-the-art school buildings or major renovations opening in September
- Netbooks for every student in grades 6-12 and take-home Netbooks for grades 8-12 for the first time this fall
- Added time in reading and math instruction for all elementary students
- Summer Academy for elementary and middle school students
- New DPS-authorized charter schools led by educators with proven track records of raising achievement
- Reading Corps tutors for all pre-K students
- Business partners for every school to help raise student achievement
- Extended day at most schools
- Two new Online Parent Portals to keep parents connected to their children's classwork and grades
- Parent Engagement initiatives, including workshops and eight neighborhood Parent Resource Centers
- Wide-ranging scholar-athlete programs through the Detroit Public School League
- Robust Fine Arts programs with instrumental music, vocal music and dance
- DPS-only college-readiness scholarship guarantees
- A portfolio of school options, including single-gender, arts and medical career paths and career technical education
- 9 different languages offered (Chinese, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Arabic, Russian, Latin and Sign Language) while the Office of English Language Learners supports teachers teaching over 8,000 students, speaking up to 44 different languages
- Safety and security enhancements districtwide
