Celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School Jazz and Marching Band returns from performance at London Olympics
The Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School Jazz and Marching Band showcased its talent and put a spotlight on DPS on a worldwide stage before crowds at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The 50-member band raised funds to make the trip a reality. “Band is about much more than 50 students playing in unison,” said band director Victoria Miller. “It’s about teaching the students to have hope, dream big and set goals.” Miller has been the band director for 37 years and said her students who went to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing have gone on to thrive in college, some of them earning scholarships.
Approximately 680 Detroit Public Schools students were featured in the 43rd Annual Evening of Fine Arts event held Thursday, May 10 at the Fox Theatre. Detroit Public Schools, SODEXO and the DPS Office of Fine Arts collaborated to present the event showcasing the work of elementary, middle, and high school students. The Detroit Public Schools Office of Fine Arts Education on May 10 will proudly present Elementary/Middle and High School Instrumental, Vocal, Visual and Performing Arts students in “An Evening of Elegance and the Arts.” The Detroit Public Schools 43rd Annual Evening of Fine Arts begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Fox Theater with special performances in the lobby and a beautiful student Art Gallery. Student Talent on display in 75th annual Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition at Detroit Institute of Arts
Paintings, drawings, pottery, photography and more by students in grades K–12 Hundreds of imaginative works created by Detroit Public Schools (DPS) students will be on display in the 75th annual Detroit Public Schools Student Exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA). The exhibition, on view April 28–June 3, is free with museum admission. An opening reception for students and their families will be held Saturday, April 28, from 1 to 3 p.m. The Charter One Foundation is supporting the special anniversary of the DPS show this year. The John R. King Academic & Performing Arts Academy’s Angelic Chorale traveled to New York March 2-5, 2012 to perform at the world’s most prestigious performing arts stage: Carnegie Hall. The Angelic Chorale was selected by the Heritage World Strides National Middle School Festival to perform as the Featured Choir at Carnegie Hall. The group of 22 students performed four songs: “Night Winds,” by Victor C.
