Diana Ross (Cass and Commerce High Schools), Aretha Franklin (Northern and Commerce), Gerald Ford, Henry Ford, Rosa Parks, Mayor Coleman Young (Eastern and Miller), Art Van Elslander (Denby), Elijah McCoy, “Bo” Schembechler Jr. and other famous Detroiters – or more accurately, their likenesses — will be recruiting new members for the Detroit Public Schools Alumni Association Wednesday for the district’s first-ever Drop and Drive event. Thanks to a loan from the Parade Company, the Big Head likenesses of 11 famous Detroiters will be outside the New Center One Building from 3-4 p.m., soliciting memberships from motorists and passersby. A membership offers opportunities and benefits, including a network of business professionals, exclusive discounts, fun and exciting members-only events, business listings, special mailings and email notifications of reunion activities, and a free membership card. Alumni Association Members also assist in Detroit Public Schools’ efforts to provide opportunities for DPS students to achieve and succeed. DPS launches citywide Detroit Public Schools Alumni Association

DPS to launch brick preservation program and fundraiser

Detroit Public Schools, in conjunction with the Detroit Public Schools Foundation, will launch a program to preserve and restore bricks from selected schools being demolished, allowing the artifacts to be sold to raise funds for schools. Bricks from Cass Technical, Finney, Mumford and Chadsey high schools will be preserved. Contractors will be responsible for removing the bricks from the sites, and the DPS Foundation has committed to securing a private firm that will package the bricks for fundraising. “We think this is an important program to honor the legacy and history of these schools, while also acknowledging that students deserve facilities that support 21st century learning and aiding schools by providing needed funding for supplemental programs,” said Chacona Johnson, President

Detroit Public Schools ramps up efforts to serve alumni

The district in November reinstated its Office of Alumni Affairs, which had been dormant since 2000. The goal, said Alumni Manager Gloria Cunningham, is to create an alumni presence in every school throughout the city and to bolster communication between the district and its alumni. “At least every high school should have a working alumni association.
