DPSCD student and No. 1 Michigan prospect drafted in the fifth round DETROIT – June 5, 2018 – Western International High School senior and baseball player, William English, age 17, was selected in the fifth round of the 2018 Major League Baseball (MLB) draft by the Los Angeles Angels. English, a 6-foot-4 right-handed pitcher and outfielder, is one of the youngest players in this year’s draft class and began playing baseball at the age of three. With a 90-93 mile per hour (mph) fastball, English was named the No. 1 top MLB draft prospect in Michigan. The Michigan Chronicle along with Talmer Bank is holding the First Annual S.W.A.G. (Students Wired for Achievement and Greatness) Scholarship ceremony on Wednesday, May 25 at 6 p.m., at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History. To make it into the Regional Final U of D Jesuit stomped Churchill 74 to 49 and Western smashed Fordson 68-31. Now Western and U of D Jesuit face off in what should be a great game on Wednesday, March 16, at 5:00 p.m. The game is to take place at Renaissance High School, 6565 W. Outer Dr. The winner of this game will get into an elite bracket of eight teams and the winner of that bracket will be the Class A State Finals Champion. The Michigan High School Athletic Association Boys District Tournament’s Semi-Final Round concluded Thursday, March 9. Class A The results from the games held at Grosse Point South High School are Western edging East English in overtime 77 to 76 and King beating Cass Tech 54 to 37. At Southfield High School, Renaissance beat Southfield Lathrup 60 to 45. Student athletes signed scholarship commitment letters to colleges and universities throughout the country More than 40 Detroit Public School League student athletes announced which colleges they plan to attend, on Wednesday, February 3, 2016 during a National Letter of Intent Signing Day ceremony held at the Horatio Williams Foundation. The Detroit Public School League hosted its 7th Annual Signing Day event where Boys Varsity Football and Girls Varsity Basketball student athletes signed their commitment letters for scholarships to colleges and universities throughout the country. Families, coaches and school supporters filled the room while the student athletes announced their college destinations.
