DPS held a poetry contest that was sponsored by the Detroit Native Sun Newspaper Group LLC, DPS Interim Superintendent Dr. John Telford, and Team for Justice. The first place winner received $100, runner-up $50 and third place $20. Along with their awards, the winners were invited to read their poems on The John Telford Show on WCHB NewsTalk1200, along with two honorable mention poets. The winners were announced January 30 and went as followed: First place: Rachel Banks, Detroit School of Arts, for her poem “In the Dark” Runner-Up: LeQuin Robinson, Cody Academy of Public Leadership, for his poem “So-Called Miranda Rights” Third place: Cassandra Coleman, Finney High School, for her poem “The Girl from Your Dream” Third place: Keith Cole-Wofford, Martin Luther

The Finney High School Freshman Academic Games Team competed in the National Academic Games Championship event in West Virginia April 30-May 4. The team members are Keebrianna Dawson, Nakaela Brown, Shaquan Grimes, Dajon Johnson and Robert Lee. In their Junior Division, the students won 2nd place in Equations; 2nd place in On Sets; and 2nd overall in Math. The freshman team also won two 3rd place awards in Social Studies. Student Shaquan Grimes won an individual medal in Social Studies. The team advisor is Mrs. Rosemarie Nagy, who is a lifetime achievement award winner with the Michigan Academic Games Organization.
Finney High School’s Freshman Academic Games Team recently returned from a week in Virginia at the National Academic Games’ Team Tournament. The team members are Keebrianna Dawson, Nakaela Brown, Shaquan Grimes, Dajon Johnson and Robert Lee. In their Junior Division, they won 2nd place in Equations and 2nd place in On Sets and 2nd in overall Math. They won two 3rd places in Social Studies. Shaquan Grimes won an individual medal in Social Studies. The Finney Robotics Team also recently competed in St. Louis and Chess competed in San Diego.
Thirty-two Detroit Public Schools students traveled to Minneapolis April 13-15 to compete in the United States Chess Federation’s 2012 National K-12 Championship and came home winners! Five DPS high school teams competed including Cass Technical High School, Douglass Academy for Young Men, Finney High School, Cody High School and Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School. Each DPS team won trophies from sections that included teams from over 50 schools throughout the country. Bryan Wilson, a fourth-grader from Spain Elementary-Middle School, was the top individual trophy-winner representing DPS with 5.5 points out of 7 possible points to score a 10th place trophy in the U1600 section. Cass finished 15th in the U1200 division. Finney finished 14th in the U800 division.
