DPS students continue to close gap with statewide peers and are now only 2.4 percent away from the state average; gap was more than 17 percent in 2008 Detroit Public Schools’ high school graduation rate increased six percentage points for 2015, bringing the rate to 77.35 percent, the highest rate in a decade. DPS students also continued to close the gap with their statewide peers and now are only 2.4 percent away from the state average. The Michigan High School Athletic Association Boys District Tournament’s Semi-Final Round concluded Thursday, March 9. Class A The results from the games held at Grosse Point South High School are Western edging East English in overtime 77 to 76 and King beating Cass Tech 54 to 37. At Southfield High School, Renaissance beat Southfield Lathrup 60 to 45. The District Championship games on Friday, March 11, will be Western vs. King at Grosse Point South at 7:00 p.m. and Renaissance vs. U of D Jesuit at Southfield at 7:00 p.m. Class B The outcome of the games held at Detroit Collegiate Prep Academy are Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern smashing Hazel Park 90 to 63. The district kicks off its Application Schools Period Wednesday, February 24 for the 22 Application Schools, which range from a number of top-ranked schools by Excellent Schools Detroit to robust STEM programs such as Detroit International Academy, home of the Pink Panthers and all-girls robotics team, to language immersion programs, including those offered at Academy of the Americas and Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies School. The month-long Application Schools period runs from February 24 to March 23. Applications are open to families of current DPS students as well as those newly enrolling or attending school elsewhere. New High School Open House Series tailored for 8th grade students
Detroit Public Schools launched this month a NEW initiative to ensure Detroit 8th grade students can explore the District’s High Schools before the spring Enrollment period to allow parents/guardians and their children to make the best decision possible for their High School of choice. All Detroit 8th grade students graduating in June 2016 are welcome to attend these fun and engaging events.
Students from Cass Technical High School, East English Village Preparatory Academy, Communication and Media Arts High School, Hutchinson Elementary School, Thurgood Marshall Elementary-Middle School, Bates Academy and Foreign Language Immersion and Cultural Studies School recently participated in First Independence Bank’s 3rd Annual Essay Contest. A recognition ceremony was held on April 22 awarding scholarships to the winners and presenting the honorable mention recipients with gifts, all participants received a Certificate of Participation. Guest speaker Detective Brian Fountain with the Detroit Police Department’s Community Services division and the Michigan Chronicle were also in attendance at this year’s ceremony.
