Detroit Native Big Sean serves as Celebrity Principal for the Day in Recognition of Get Schooled Detroit Attendance Challenge Winner, Bates Academy

Recording artist and Detroit native Big Sean returned to his hometown on Thursday, June 12 to act as “Principal for the Day” at Bates Academy, an Excellent Schools Detroit “Top K-8 Recommended School.” Competing against thousands of students from 37 Detroit Public Schools’ (DPS) middle and high schools, Bates won the Get Schooled Detroit Attendance Challenge this spring, which is a partnership of Viacom, Get Schooled and Detroit Public Schools. MTV’s Sway and DJ Fingers of FM 98 WJLB joined Big Sean to host an all-school assembly celebrating the school’s victory. Durfee students participate in American Heart Association’s “Jump Rope for Heart”

Students at Durfee Elementary-Middle School participated in the American Heart Association’s “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraiser. Students enjoyed the activity while learning about the heart and multiple ways to keep it healthy. Durfee students raised $510 and presented a check to AHA’s Vice President of Youth Market for the Detroit-area, Brittany Merritt, on Friday, April 4. Durfee students receive new “Get Schooled” T-Shirts as Round 1 winners of Get Schooled Attendance Campaign

Round 2 ends March 14! Make sure your students check-in daily! The 7th and 8th grade students at Durfee Elementary-Middle School are donning new “Get Schooled” t-shirts after winning Round 1 of the Get Schooled Attendance Campaign. More than 90 shirts were delivered to the school from Viacom. Durfee students were also recently invited to participate in a Get Schooled Focus Group – thanks to their remarkable participation rate in the Attendance Campaign – to give Get Schooled officials a few tips on “How Students Learn Best.” Highlights from the campaign: Durfee Elementary-Middle School was the winner of Round One! Durfee had 90 students sign up, and they ‘checked in’ over 1,000 times – which means they had every student check in every day

Schools across DPS enjoy March is Reading Month!

Detroit Public Schools and the Office of Literacy on Monday, March 3, 2014 kicked off hundreds of reading and literacy activities, events and contests to celebrate “March is Reading Month.” Pulaski Elementary-Middle School held its first annual Preschool Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast in Mrs. M.Thompson-Cook’s class to celebrate READ ACROSS AMERICA DAY as well as the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Students were served “green” scrambled eggs, turkey or ham, and juice. Principal Desheil Echols even tried a test-taste! The day also consisted of a story read-aloud of “Green Eggs and Ham,” literacy games, cross-curricular activities, arts and crafts, and Dr. Seuss learning stations. DETROIT (December 13, 2013) – Students at Durfee Elementary-Middle School had the unique opportunity to engage one-on-one with Hollywood co-producer Allegra Clegg on Friday, December 13 to learn about the making of Transformers: Age of Extinction, filmed in Detroit. Clegg, a key member of the filmmaking team on the first three installments of the Transformers franchise, presented a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Transformers as part of a collaboration with Get Schooled and Paramount Pictures, a unit of Viacom, to help boost attendance across Detroit Public Schools. Durfee holds pep rally to kick-off MEAP testing

Durfee Elementary-Middle School views MEAP as a competition against themselves. The school held a pep rally to get students excited about the MEAP. The goal was to beam more positive light on test-taking with the expectation that students will perform better. To make the test even more exciting, 20 top MEAP scorers will receive a $5 McDonald’s gift card; the top scoring class will receive a pizza party; and the top 10 MEAP reading and math scorers will win a trip to the Olive Garden or Red Lobster. Durfee Count Day 2013 features Exotic Zoo, raffle, food and more

Edgar O. Durfee, who served as Probate Judge for 50 years in Detroit, would have been proud of his namesake as 640 Durfee Elementary-Middle School students attended Count Day on October 2. Each student was given a raffle ticket as they entered the building for a chance to win “Dollar Tree” candy at the end of the day. There was also locker decorating, compliments of Durfee’s enthusiastic 1st, 4th and 5th graders, opportunities to win gift cards and a delicious meal including barbeque chicken, macaroni and cheese, muffins and cobbler.
