Marcus Garvey Academy and Bennett Elementary students take part in Navy Week events with ship tours, obstacle course, mock drills
Students from Marcus Garvey Academy participated in an obstacle course and other activities during the first week of school with representatives and sailors from the U.S. Navy as part of Detroit’s Navy Week events. The program was coordinated through the school’s partnership with Compuware. The students were invited to participate in an afternoon mini boot-camp, featuring mock drills. Also on-hand was the Navy’s Chevy Suburban customized to include a full-scale, state-of-the-art media center featuring a four-unit video game system for school-age children to enjoy. The American Legion donated 36 US flags, poles and wall brackets to Bennett Elementary. The donation followed an article that was pulished in the Detroit News in June regarding two bills pending in the state legislature that would requre schools to display an American flag in every room. Douglas Williams, Legislative Affairs Chairman, American Legion Department of Michigan, promised to provide US flags to schools in need in that article. Bennett reached out to him, and less than a month later the flags were presented. Bennett Elementary students loved the opportunity to have “Recess” with Mayor Bing on June 7. “Our students were very excited to see the Mayor,” said Judy Hesse. “Many of our students have never seen someone as important as Mayor Bing. They were very excited and found the mayor to be an inspiration. Fourth grade students from Detroit’s Bennett Elementary School rehearsed a song they composed for InsideOut Literary Arts Project’s 2012 Get Versed showcase with singer Audra Kubat. Bennett’s Girls Scouts also participated in the Cinqo de Mayo Parade.
Detroit 2020 teamed up with Detroit Public Schools today, May 8, 2012, for a new initiative titled, “Keep It Clean!” Students and staff members from Marion Law Academy, Bennett Elementary School and Schulze Academy for Technology & Arts completed clean-up and gardening projects to beautify their school grounds and adjacent property.
