The euphoria still hasn’t subsided for the pitcher who threw the first perfect game at Comerica Park.
“It’s an amazing feeling,’’ said Western International High senior right hander Todd Phelps, the Detroit Public School League’s Proud Strong Learner of the Week. “I never thought it would be me to throw a perfect game in the championship at Comerica. I had butterflies before the game. When I got there and saw the field, I just zoned in.”
Phelps’ 12-strikeout, 21 batters-up, 21 batters-down performance May 19 against Renaissance High led Coach Mike Vazquez’s Cowboys to an 8-0 shutout victory and their fourth consecutive PSL boys’ baseball title.
The masterpiece was seen by hundreds of fans who turned out for “School Spirit Night,” a celebration of DPS pride and support, but word of Phelps’ perfection has since gained national media attention. “It’s been crazy around school,’’ Phelps said. “Everybody’s been coming up to me and family and friends have been calling to congratulate me.”
Understandably, Phelps considers the perfect game to be the highlight of his three seasons on Western’s varsity. The highlight before then was the two-run home run he hit against Cass Tech just days earlier in the PSL semifinal game.
“There’s an athletic code that the work you put into something is what you get out of it, and Todd is an example of that because of his work ethic from day one,’’ Vazquez said. “He may not be perfect like he finished this high school season, but he knows with success comes a lot of hard work. I’m proud and honored to have coached him.”
Phelps will be acknowledged with the other weekly honorees at the first annual Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learners of the Year Awards, sponsored by McDonald’s, on June 9, 5 p.m.-7 p.m., at the DPS Welcome Center.
