Western International High’s Anthony Gutierrez is a leader both by example and performance for the Cowboys’ baseball team. The junior first baseman is batting .541 with four home runs and 22 RBI and has been named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
“After graduating eight seniors last year, I was looking for some leadership this season and Anthony and (senior catcher) Tratez Henton have filled in wonderfully,” Western coach Juan Sanchez said.
One of last year’s team leaders was Hector Gutierrez, Anthony’s older brother, who earned a baseball scholarship at the University of Michigan. Sanchez says his junior first baseman has a good eye at the plate – no strikeouts and 13 walks – and is another top college prospect.
“I like his attitude, work ethic and desire to help make our team better every day,’’ Sanchez said. “Not only is he hitting well but his play at first base has been vital to our success.”
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
