Super sophomore is one description of Renaissance’s high-flying outside hitter Solei Thomas.
“She’s a girls’ volleyball phenom,’’ Lady Phoenix coach Louis Mitchell said of Thomas, the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
“In the recent tournament at University of Michigan-Dearborn, her kill percentage was over .600, and .300 is good. She had 36 kills, and 66 per cent of her attacks were kills. She also had 10 aces and served at 94%.”
Thomas’ performance helped Renaissance reach the gold medal championship match. The Phoenix lost to Wyandotte Roosevelt, sustaining their only loss and finishing the tourney with a 3-1-1 record. For the year, the Phoenix are 12-5-5 overall and 2-0 in the PSL.
As an offensive-oriented team, Renaissance relies on Thomas’ dominance at the net to lead the way.
“She’s our most consistent offensive weapon and she’s getting better every week,” Mitchell said. “Right now, she’s touching 9-feet-10 when she’s hitting and she jumps even higher in big games. She goes over people, and that helps our offense tremendously. She’s our go-to-player.”
Thomas has a 3.5 grade point average and has picked up where she left off as a freshman. Renaissance lost a tough five-set match against Cass Tech in last year’s PSL championship game, but a star was born in Thomas.
“She had several jump serves toward the end that got us back into the game,’’ Mitchell said. “So she was good out of the gate and she’s still improving.”
