Renaissance High third baseman Rafael Galindez is just a sophomore, which means he’s just scratching the surface as a Detroit Public School League baseball player.
With a .389 batting average, the lowest strikeout ratio on the team and a 3.5 grade point average, Galindez is already making a lofty impression. He’s been named the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
“Rafael’s contribution to our team begins in the classroom,’’ Phoenix coach Leon McKissic said. “He understands the concept of student-athlete. After a hard day of school, he puts forth the same effort on the field. We expected great things out of him this year and we are proud to say that he exceeded our expectations.”
Galindez, who also pitches, allowed just one run on four hits with five strikeouts in five innings to beat nonleague foe Lansing Sexton. He also was 3-for-5 with a double, two stolen bases, two runs scored and four RBI in the doubleheader header against Sexton.
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
