Renaissance High’s Zahji Billingslea is hitting the cover off the ball and covering a lot of turf in left field.
The sophomore left fieder was 3-for-3 with a double and four RBI in a 12-2 victory against Cass Tech and was 2-for-4 with a triple and three RBI in a 13-4 victory against East English Village and has been named Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
“She has really improved this year defensively and offensively,’’ Renaissance girls’ softball coach Garrar Taylor said. “She’s hitting the ball tremendously and making good plays. She has a strong arm, speed and power. She’s doing it all and is just a good kid.”
Billingslea played a lot last year as a freshman. She gives the Lady Phoenix versatility with her ability to play all outfield positions.
“I’m fast and can get to a lot of balls,’’ she said. “But I still want to keep improving and hopefully I can earn a full-ride scholarship to play in college. I hope to major in nuclear engineering or biomedical engineering.”
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
