Renaissance High junior Breanna Lawrence makes an impact whether she’s playing the field or swinging the bat.
As the hard-hitting second baseman for the 10-time defending Detroit Public School League girls’ softball champions, Lawrence has been named the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
“She plays second base but she can play multiple positions,” Coach Garrard Taylor said. “She’s batting second in lineup and she’s producing a lot of runs and playing good defense. She’s just an all-around good ballplayer.”
For the season, in 28 games, Lawrence is batting .500 (38-for-76) with seven doubles, six triples, two HRs, 30 RBI, 42 runs scored and 13 stolen bases. She has a .829 slugging percentage and an .679 on-base percentage, striking out just five times with eight walks.
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
