As a three-year varsity player and a two-year starter, Renaissance High’s Ajee Jones has been part of the core that has kept the Lady Phoenix girls’ volleyball program one of the best in the Detroit Public School League.
“Ajee’s contribution is immeasurable,” Renaissance coach Louis Mitchell said of his 5-8 senior outside hitter, the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week. “She’s my number one attacker, one of our top passers and she’s always in the serve-receive pattern. She’s an all-around player. Her leadership really contributed to the success we had this season.”
The Lady Phoenix finished as PSL runner-up to Cass Tech and made their presence felt with a district championship in the Michigan High School Athletic Association state playoffs before losing in the regional semifinals Tuesday, marking the end of Jones’ high school career.
“Of course, I’m sad that it’s over but we had a great season,” she said. “Coach Mitchell and the assistant coaches do a great job. We’re like a family. I just hope next year’s team will be as good as the teams I’ve played on. I wish the best for them.”
Jones is being recruited by several colleges. She plans to major in Sports Management and make that her profession.
“Volleyball has done a lot for me,” she said. “I was named All-City and All-Region and I’ll be going to college on a scholarship. I’m still in the process of deciding where I’m going. But it’s because of volleyball that I have choices.”
