DCP-Northwestern outside hitter Alexa Armstrong is living up to her last name. Her strong arm has made her the Lady Colts’ girls’ volleyball leader all season and the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
“If we didn’t have Alexa, our record would be 0-8,” said DCP-NW coach Ray Williams, whose team finished the week with a 4-4 overall record, 3-3 in the PSL West.
In her second year as a starter, Armstrong, a 6-0 junior, led the Lady Colts to a pair of victories last week, finishing with 16 aces, seven kills and six blocks in a five-set win against Mumford and 15 aces, 10 kills and five blocks in a three-set sweep against Central.
“She’s having an outstanding season overall and leads the team in most statistics,” Williams said. “She’s a good kid who plays hard all the time. She knows she doesn’t have to go for the kill all the time. She understands the game. She plays smart.”
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
