Denby High senior Ella Shelton hit a home run and struck out six in a two-inning no-hit “mercy” victory against Southeastern and has been named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
Shelton is the Lady Tars’ ace pitcher and leadoff hitter and also excels academically.
She’s the class Salutatorian and a member of the school’s debate team, student government and National Honor Society. She has been accepted to the University of Michigan, where she plans to enroll this fall.
“She has tremendous drive, intelligence and track speed,’’ said Denby coach Ivan King. “I adore this kid and wish I could clone her.”
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
