Cody High’s Michael Drayton accounted for all of his team’s scoring in a 12-6 victory against Renaissance last Friday and has been named the Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
In a game the Comets needed to win in their bid for the PSL playoffs, Drayton, a 5-9, 165-pound senior, scored touchdowns as a defensive back and a running back. He returned an interception 67 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, then scored on a 27-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.
“This is his third year on the varsity and I’ve watched him grow into a great athlete,’’ Cody head football coach Calvin Norman said. “He’s an outstanding defensive back and I expect him to play in college. He’s being recruited by Division 2 schools.”
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
