Cody High’s Creiona Posey is the Detroit Public School League’s Proud Strong Learner of the Week after leading her team in typical fashion, scoring 18 points with 19 assists in a 65-9 rout of Westside and 25 points with 10 assists in a 76-41 victory against City.
“She’s a natural point guard but she’s had to be more of a point shooter this season,” Comets’ coach Charles Knott said. “Every game, she’s being double-teamed and triple-teamed but she’s still averaging 25.4 points and 9.2 assists a game. She’s one of the top point guards in the state.”
Posey, a 5-6 junior, is Cody’s first scholar-athlete to be selected PSLer of the Week. “I’m honored,” she said. “It’s added motivation to continue playing my game each week and to keep doing what I can to help us win.”
“I’m working on everything, from using my left hand more to dribbling to shooting to passing,” she said. “Every day, I’m working on something different.”
As evidenced by her 3.7 grade point average, Posey also makes it a priority to stay on top of her studies. “I like English because I’m a good writer, but math is my favorite subject,” she said. “I need to be able to take care of my money when I become a millionaire.”
Posey is already being heavily recruited by several major colleges but she’s taking her time before making a decision.
“I want to make some visits first,” she said. “Right now, I’m just focusing on trying to make it to the PSL championship and to the Breslin Center (at Michigan State University) for the state (championship). We’ve got a lot of freshman and sophomores on our team, but if we keep getting better, we have a good chance of reaching those goals.”
