As the latest standout to be named the Detroit Public School League’s Proud Strong Learner of the Week, Cody High’s Zedric Sadler accepted the honor in the spirit of a leader.
“It’s good, but I’m all about the team,” said the Comets’ 6-3 senior point guard. “It’s all about our goals and our focus on winning the west side and going deep in the playoffs.”
With a record of 8-0 in the PSL West and 11-2 overall, Cody’s goals are on track largely because of its team captain Sadler, who averaged 18.5 points, five rebounds, 6.5 steals and 6.5 assists last week in victories against Western and Southwestern.
“He’s the heart and soul of our team,” said Comets’ Coach Bryant Tipton. ” Anything you ask this kid to do, from running cross country last fall until right now, he’s been willing to do and he makes everyone else do it as well. As far as his game, you name it. He can score inside, outside, fading away, going to the basket. Whatever you need, he can deliver.”
With that kind of talent, Sadler is attracting college recruiters. “Kansas, Temple, Duquesne are some of the schools that have been looking at me,” he said. “I’m just waiting on my SATs, but it’s looking good.”
For now, Sadler is gearing to make the most of the rest of his high school career. “We’ve beaten the teams we needed to beat and we’re rolling,” he said. “My role is to keep my teammates together, get everybody involved and be a leader. I’ve always done that, but this year I’ve stepped it up a little bit more.”
