Communication and Media Arts High has been one of the surprises of the Detroit Public School League boys’ basketball season and leading the way has been senior Jalen Hairston, the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
“He’s the glue to our team,’’ CMA coach Rafeal Peterson said of Hairston, a 6-3 guard-forward who has averaged 17 points and eight rebounds in helping the Pharaohs stay unbeaten in league play with a 7-0 record entering Friday’s game against Denby.
“In terms of defensive assignments and offensively, Jalen is our leader,” Peterson said. “He plays in the middle and does a great job with his decision-making of finding the open man or taking the shot himself.”
Hairston is in his second year on the varsity after transferring from King following his sophomore year. He also excels in the classroom with a 3.5 grade point average and is drawing interest from several local colleges.
The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators.
