Western International and Henry Ford formed a Detroit Public School League dynamic duo in the Michigan High School Athletic Association boys’ basketball state tournament and have been named PSL Proud Strong Learners of the Week.
In showcasing PSL basketball as two of just eight teams playing on the final day of the season, Coach Derrick McDowell’s Cowboys completed a perfect 26-0 season by winning the Class A title, the first state championship in Western history, while Coach Ken Flowers’ Trojans (21-6) also made school history, finishing as Class B runners-up after reaching the state championship game for the first time.
The PSLer of the Week distinction coincides with a slew of accolades the Cowboys and Trojans have received since season’s end.
Western seniors Josh McFolley and Gerald Blackshear and junior Brailen Neely are on multiple All-State teams, as are Ford senior Josh Davis and Trojans junior James Towns. McDowell and Flowers have also been acknowledged with Coach of the Year honors by several media outlets.
