Cass Tech High senior Ravyn Baxter doesn’t claim to be the fastest sprinter or the strongest endurance runner. But when it comes to one lap around the track, Baxter is emerging as one of the state’s best 400-meter girl competitors.
“She came on a little last year, but this year Ravyn has really come into her own,” Cass Tech coach Chris Wright said of Baxter, the Detroit Public School League’s Proud Strong Learner of the Week.
In the prestigious Shumake Relays last Saturday at Renaissance High, Baxter stood on the podium with three medals around neck after finishing first in the 400 meters with a time of 58.85, while running the lead leg for the Technicians’ victorious 4×400 relay team and the third-place 4×200 relay team.
“She also was my lead leg when we won the indoor state championship in the 4×400 in February,” Wright said. “The more experience she gets against good competition, the better she races.”
Baxter is in her third year of running track, but said she’s more driven now than ever to make her mark for the defending PSL champions.
“I’m working harder and really putting my head more into it,’’ she said. “I’m looked at as a much stronger competitor now than I was as a sophomore or junior. I’m someone that people look forward to seeing run.”
Although she will be one of the favorites May 26 in the PSL track and field finals at Renaissance High, Baxter admittedly was surprised about being named PSLer of the Week.
“It’s a great honor, but I was very shocked that it was me,” she said. “I’m still surprised that I’m winning races. But my time keeps improving in the 400 and the team is improving. It makes me happy. But I’m glad even more that I can make my parents happy.”
Baxter says her favorite school subjects are physiology and anatomy. She’s still deciding between pursuit of a career in veterinary science or mass communications. With a 3.2 grade point average, she has drawn interest from several colleges.
“The program here at Cass Tech is awesome,’’ she said. “The coaches are great, we all work hard and we all walk around every day with smiles on our faces. Track is giving me a great opportunity to get a scholarship.”
