Over 1,000 Students Attend Construction Science Expo to Experience Construction/Engineering Careers

The Michigan Design & Construction Coalition, Black Caucus Foundation of Detroit, Michigan Department of Transportation and Detroit Public Schools hosted the 2nd Annual Construction Science Expo at Randolph Career and Technical Center on May 22, 2012. The goal behind the event was to promote a drug-free educational experience and highlight construction/engineering careers as an option for students once they graduate from high school. Students in grades 7-12, who have signed a drug-free pledge, attended the event to engage in hands-on masonry, carpentry and electrical work, and were able to operate heavy construction equipment. The students rotated through various skilled trade sessions including electronics, HVAC, carpentry, masonry and plumbing. DPS and major arts organizations announce groundbreaking partnerships to transform the Detroit School of Arts into top arts school

Detroit Public Schools and representatives of some of the area’s leading arts organizations on Monday announced a groundbreaking partnership intended to transform the Detroit School of Arts into America’s top public arts school through a new collaborative governance with prestigious arts and education institutions. A new governing council for DSA, which is expected to lead to significant joint ventures and unprecedented opportunities for DSA students, include representatives from the Detroit Arts Corridor Organization, the University of Michigan School of Education and Hudson-Webber Foundation.  Partners include the Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Sphinx Organization, Mosaic Youth Theater, and University Musical Society. Compuware Hosts End-of-the-Year Celebration for Marcus Garvey Students

Compuware Corporation, an official Detroit Public Schools Volunteer Business Corps partner, held an End-of-the-Year Celebration for Marcus Garvey students on May 18, 2012 at the Compuware Headquarters. All middle school students from Marcus Garvey Academy attended the event. City Year volunteers gave a “Power Greet” to students as they arrived to the building with songs and dancing. Students then heard from Compuware executives, including Denise Starr, Chief Administrative Officer, and engaged in fun activities such as a “Body Pride” rap sing-along, technology exercise, photos with Detroit Lions player Don Carey, mascots Roary, Paws, and Ronald McDonald. DPS classrooms showcase global perspectives during a school’s Around the World in a Day event

At schools like Priest Elementary-Middle and Davison Elementary, classrooms each adopted a county for the district’s “Adopt a Country/ Region Program.” During the recent day-long, “Around the World in a Day” event at Davison, children displayed their knowledge of their adopted countries’ products, currency, customs and dress. The school, which runs a micro-society program year-long, instructed students to choose to operate businesses this year from other countries across the world. One classroom that studied Mexico made Mexican dolls and clothing. In the classroom that studied Italy, students sold bread and olive oil. Cody MCH has “poetic power!”

Cody Medicine and Community Health will be honored in Creative Communication Anthology of Michigan Youth Poets. The winners of the Spring 2011 contest competed against their peers from the entire state of Michigan at the high school level. Because of the amount of winners, the school will receive a free anthology. According to Creative Communication Publication, “Creative Communication  is selective and considers it an honor if we accept your work.” Congratulations to students India Cross, Tiffany Adkins, Diamond Anderson-Stokes, Linda Charleston, Valeria Ledbetter, Markia King and Kendra Steed, as well as Principal Michelle Parker and English teacher Ms.Careathers. Over 300 Students with 3.5 GPAs or Higher Honored at 28th Annual Excellence Awards Banquet

Ten students with perfect 4.0 GPAs were honored. Event showcased the top 3% of DPS graduating seniors whose college choices range from Morehouse, Spelman, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, University of Southern California, Wayne State, University of Michigan and more. Detroit Public Schools hosted the 28th Annual Excellence Awards Banquet showcasing the top 3% of the district’s graduating seniors Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at 6 p.m. The event was held in the Cobo Center Riverview Ballroom. More than 300 DPS students who have held a 3.5 GPA or higher during their high school careers were honored. The event honored 10 all “A” students who received the Excellence Awards Scholarship. 11 DPS Students Awarded $25,000 in Scholarships from MORSE Code Scholarship Contest

Eleven Detroit Public Schools students were named winners of the MORSE Code Scholarship Contest May 15, 2012 during a press conference at Renaissance High School. Scholarship sponsor Michael Morse, P.C. Attorneys at Law, in partnership with Detroit Public Schools, the Detroit Public Schools Foundation and United Way, announced the winners, where 11 DPS juniors and seniors received college scholarships totaling $25,000. Nearly 200 DPS students submitted multi–media entries conveying a creative message on the dangers of distracted driving, especially cell phone use while behind the wheel. The MORSE Code Scholarship Contest (Make Our Roads Safe Everywhere) promotes awareness among teens. One grand prize winner received a $5,000 scholarship and 10 students received $2,000 each toward furthering their higher educational goals. … Continue reading

Clippert Academy 8th Grade Students came in 6th place in the state of Michigan’s SumDog Mathematics Competition

Of the 62 schools that competed Statewide in the SumDog Mathematics Competition, Clippert Academy 8th Grade Students came in 6th place in the state of Michigan.  Clippert’s Eloy Rodriguez placed 9th in the Top 10 students in the state of Michigan.  Clippert was invited to attend the National Competition!  

Bennett Elementary School works with InsideOut Literary Arts Project

Fourth grade students from Detroit’s Bennett Elementary School rehearsed a song they composed for InsideOut Literary Arts Project’s 2012 Get Versed showcase with singer Audra Kubat. Bennett’s Girls Scouts also participated in the Cinqo de Mayo Parade.
