Congratulations Detroit Henry Ford Trojans Boys Basketball team! After being runner-up last year they managed to secure the state championship this year and did it in a convincing fashion. The Trojans incredible offense propelled them to victory in a 61-47 final against Stevensville Lakeshore at the Michigan State Breslin Center on March 26. Henry Ford is the official 2016 Class B Boys Basketball Tournament Champion.
The King Girls Basketball Team represented the Detroit Public Schools wonderfully by getting all the way to the championship game! Of the 64 teams in the tournament Detroit Martin Luther King Girls Basketball Team is the 2016 Girls State Championship Runner-up! King just barely lost 65 to 67 against Warren Cousino on March 19. What a great season by all the girls basketball teams!
Only four girls basketball teams are left in the MHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament and Martin Luther King is one of them. King barely got by their last opponent, Ann Arbor Huron, winning 58-54 in overtime on Tuesday, March 15. Now King plays St Johns on Friday, March 18, at 1 p.m. at the Michigan State University Breslin Center. If King wins they’ll play for the MHSAA Girls Basketball Tournament Championship Saturday, March 20, at noon. The only Detroit Public School boys basketball team left in the tournament is Henry Ford and they face a tough New Haven team on Tuesday, March 22, at Lake Shore High School at 7:00 p.m. Henry Ford is three wins away from being MHSAA Boys Tournament
To make it into the Regional Final U of D Jesuit stomped Churchill 74 to 49 and Western smashed Fordson 68-31. Now Western and U of D Jesuit face off in what should be a great game on Wednesday, March 16, at 5:00 p.m. The game is to take place at Renaissance High School, 6565 W. Outer Dr. The winner of this game will get into an elite bracket of eight teams and the winner of that bracket will be the Class A State Finals Champion. The upcoming Girls Michigan High School Athletic Association Tournament Quarterfinal Games are Tuesday, March 15. Class A King smashed Southfield Lathrup 74 to 56 on Thursday, March 10. King plays Ann Arbor Huron at Southfield at 5:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 15. Class B Mumford squeaked by Harper Woods 57-55 on Thursday, March 10. Mumford plays Country Day at Marysville at 7:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 15.
The Michigan High School Athletic Association Boys District Tournament’s Semi-Final Round concluded Thursday, March 9. Class A The results from the games held at Grosse Point South High School are Western edging East English in overtime 77 to 76 and King beating Cass Tech 54 to 37. At Southfield High School, Renaissance beat Southfield Lathrup 60 to 45. The District Championship games on Friday, March 11, will be Western vs. King at Grosse Point South at 7:00 p.m. and Renaissance vs. U of D Jesuit at Southfield at 7:00 p.m. Class B The outcome of the games held at Detroit Collegiate Prep Academy are Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern smashing Hazel Park 90 to 63. The 2016 Annual Operation Friendship Boys Basketball games between the Catholic High School League (CHSL) and the Detroit Public School League (DPSL) were held Thursday, March 3, 2016. The consolation game was played at Renaissance High School. Renaissance played against De La Salle and won handily 65 to 49. The championship game was held at Wayne State University, East English Village fell short against U of D Jesuit and lost by a score of 92 to 76. We’d like to thank the Catholic School League and the Detroit Public School League for their continued collaboration with Operation Friendship.
The Annual Operation Friendship Boys Basketball Games between the Catholic High School League (CHSL) and the Detroit Public School League (DPSL) teams will be held Thursday, March 3, 2016 at two non-traditional sites. The consolation game will be played at Renaissance High School (Renaissance vs. De La Salle) at 4:00 p.m., tickets are $5 and will be sold only at the door. The championship game will be played at Wayne State University (East English vs. U of D Jesuit) at 7:00 p.m., tickets are $10 and a limited number are on sale at East English and the Office of Athletics (Fisher Bldg., 9th Floor, call 313-870-3782).
