Kids Read Now ice cream socials for first-grade students at Detroit Public Library

DPSCD has initiated a summer reading program, Kids Read Now, which focuses on this year’s first-grade students. This past month, every first-grade student left for summer break with three books. Throughout the summer, as students finish reading books, parents will notify the organization via text, and the student will receive a new book in the mail. Every first-grade student will receive up to nine books total (three at school and six in the mail).

To support our families with receiving the additional six books throughout the summer, we will be hosting ice cream socials throughout the city. Students will bring their summer reading books, and volunteers will read with students and help with texting, calling, or emailing to prompt the organization to mail the next book. Please see scheduled dates below and watch the website for additional dates coming soon!
