School Board re-elects officers

Detroit Public Schools Community District’s School Board held an election of officers during its organizational meeting prior to the first school board meeting of the year, January 9, 2018 at Osborn High School.

Led by Superintendent Vitti, a nomination was made to re-elect current school board president, Dr. Iris Taylor for the 2018-19 school year. All school board members voted unanimously. Immediately after her re-election, Dr. Taylor took over the meeting as remaining officers were nominated.

The previous officers were also unanimously re-elected:

  • Angelique Peterson-Mayberry, Vice President
  • Sonya Mays, Treasurer
  • Misha Stallworth, Secretary

External Committees

President Dr. Taylor appointed Member LaMar Lemmons to the Committee of the Michigan Association of School Boards (MASB). Secretary Misha Stallworth was appointed to the Committee of the Wayne County Association of School Boards (WCASB). Vice President Peterson-Mayberry was appointed to the Committee of the Detroit Public Schools Foundation (DPSF).

Internal Committees

Curriculum/Academics Committee

President Dr. Taylor reappointed Member Dr. Deborah Hunter-Harvill as Chair of the Curriculum/Academics Committee, Members Georgia Lemmons and Secretary Misha Stallworth were also reappointed to serve as members of the Curriculum/Academics Committee.

Finance Committee

President Dr. Taylor reappointed Treasurer Sonya Mays as Chair of the Finance Committee, Member LaMar Lemmons and Vice President Angelique Peterson-Mayberry were also reappointed to serve as members of the Finance Committee.

Policy Ad-hoc Committee

President Dr. Taylor reappointed Secretary Misha Stallworth to serve as Chair of the Policy Ad-hoc Committee and Treasurer Sonya Mays was reappointed as a member of the Policy Ad-hoc Committee. Member Georgia Lemmons was newly appointed to the Policy Ad-hoc Committee.

Selection Committee for the Detroit Library Commission

President Dr. Taylor appointed Vice President Angelique Peterson-Mayberry to serve as Committee Chair for the Selection Committee for the Detroit Library Commission, Dr. Deborah Hunter-Harvill and Member Georgia Lemmons were reappointed to serve as members of the Selection Committee for the Detroit Library Commission.

Superintendent Nikolai Vitti acknowledged the first anniversary of the school board and presented each member with a plaque of appreciation for their dedication and commitment to DPSCD students and staff.

The school board was elected in November 2016 and is comprised of seven members whose names with ending terms are below:

  • Dr. Deborah Hunter-Harvill (2018)
