Mothers, grandmothers, and women from the community gathered for Detroit International Academy for Young Women’s Ninth Annual Hat Strut for Breast Cancer Awareness. Dr. Lisa Newman, Director of the Breast Cancer Oncology Program at Henry Ford Health System, provided tips on how to detect breast cancer and take precautions. After the ceremony, K-12 students took a strut around the block in their handmade hats to show their support.
“The Hat Strut is a powerful event for women of all ages to spread awareness of breast cancer,” said DIA senior, Tiairah Ward. “We host this event every year and every year I take away something new. As an African American woman, I know I am more at risk. I learned from survivors who were my age when they were diagnosed with breast cancer. That is why I am taking the pledge to take control of my own health.”
