DPSCD Leadership thanks Enhancement Millage supporters

Detroit Public Schools Community District Transition Manager Steven Rhodes and Interim Superintendent Alycia Meriweather express appreciation for the passage of the Wayne County Education Enhancement Millage.

“We are extremely pleased with the decision the voters of Wayne County made yesterday. This funding will greatly assist the district to continue our momentum in the right direction,” said Rhodes.

The two-mill, six-year enhancement millage will provid a dedicated source of funding for all school districts in Wayne County, generating about $385 in additional resources per student. For Detroit Public Schools Community District this will mean $18 million in unrestricted funds for additional resources for students. All expenditures will be subject to annual independent audits.

“I am confident that the district is on firm footing. All critical elements are in place, we are virtually debt-free, we have a comprehensive academic plan and our citizens have cast their vote for local control, said Rhodes. “I thank all of the citizens who voted in favor of the Education Millage.”

Under the enhancement millage, funds can be utilized for a wide-range of educational enhancements such as capital improvements, restoring art, music or gym to schools or strengthening the curriculum to include more language, math or science courses. DPSCD will determine how to invest the funds according to what is most beneficial for the students.

“We now have an exceptional opportunity to invest more fully in programs and initiatives that will strengthen the district’s academic plan, improve our facilities and re-enforce safety and security. Those are three primary areas of focus on which our budget is based and it is our intent to implement our plans with fidelity,” said Meriweather. “These are our kids, our schools and we have the responsibility to provide an excellent education. This funding will help us to accomplish our goal.”
