Detroit Public Schools Community District Celebrates Wayne County Manufacturing Day!

Students to visit a variety of manufacturing sites throughout Wayne County

Detroit Public Schools Community District will celebrate Wayne County Manufacturing Day on Friday, October 7. Students from 13 of the District’s career and technical centers, middle and high schools will visit manufacturing sites and community colleges around the county.

“Manufacturing Day provides our students with options and opportunities to be exposed to the various manufacturing industries in our county,” said Marion K. McGhee, DPSCD Executive Director for the Office of Career and College Readiness. “It is an exciting time when business and industry partners open their doors to connect with students and the workforce of tomorrow.”

Manufacturing Day — or MFG Day — is a national celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. It is celebrated throughout North America on the first Friday in October.

Participating DPSCD locations include:

  • Academy of the Americas
  • Adult Education-West Campus
  • A.L. Holmes Middle Elementary-Middle School
  • Breithaupt Career and Technical Center
  • Carver STEM Academy
  • Cass Technical High School
  • Davis Aerospace at Golightly Career and Technical Center
  • Dossin Elementary-Middle School
  • Gompers Elementary-Middle School
  • Henderson Academy
  • Palmer Park Preparatory Academy
  • Randolph Career and Technical Center
  • Western International High School

According to Automation Ally, Michigan currently leads the way in the number of events taking place. In the tri-county area alone, 111 manufacturing employers will open their doors to more than 4,600 students, representing 62 schools in 66 districts!

Each manufacturing site will host tours and demonstrations, employee-student mentoring, provide information about career opportunities and more! Additionally, educational and training opportunities will be available at Baker College, Henry Ford Community College and Wayne County Community College.

This 2016-2017 school year, the Office of Career and College Readiness – Career and Technical Education, launched its first Manufacturing Program, providing students with first-hand experience to the Manufacturing industry. The program is currently being offered at Breithaupt Career and Technical Center.
