WHAT: Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) will host an appreciation event at the District’s 240-acre Camp Burt Shurly for current and potential donors.
According to Camp Burt Shurly supporter, Mark Shrupp, “The goal of the event is to introduce the camp to a number of potential donors and others within the philanthropic and business community and share with them the ideas we have about improving and expanding the camp.”
“Additionally, we want to show our extreme gratitude to those who have donated over $200,000 in cash and nearly $100,000 in in-kind donations thus far,” he added.
A formal capital campaign will begin in the fall to advance improvements to cabins and the main lodge and expand the camp operations to the spring and fall months. Currently, the cabins and main lodge are not heated and are shut down at the end of summer.
Event attendees will dine on camp-style refreshments including: bratwursts, chicken satays, chicken wings, corn-on-the-cob, baked beans, kale salad, fruit and a variety of beverages.

Each summer during an five-week program, boys and girls aged 8 -12 attend the camp for a five-day and night camping experience. It is currently operated by the Detroit Rescue Mission.
