NEW DPS High School Passport Guide now available to families district-wide

The DPS High School Passport is the guide to picking the perfect high school for the 2016 School Year

The 2016 High School Passport Guide is now available to all Detroit Public Schools families district-wide. This action-packed passport takes readers on a journey into DPS’ diverse high school curriculums, offering medical career tracks, fine and performing arts, pilot certification, career technical centers, culinary arts, single gender (all-girl and all-boy) academies and more.

DPS also touts a 9th Grade Career Academy program, where high school students can earn a comprehensive high school diploma, skilled trade certification and a paid internship through extensive coursework. And, the District offers the only single-gender comprehensive high schools in a public school setting for both boys and girls!

This past year, Detroit Public Schools high school seniors earned $164 million in scholarships and grant awards.

In addition to the new High School Passport Guide, parents and guardians of 8th grade students were invited to take part in a new series of High School Open Houses this winter to ensure 8th grade students have every opportunity to explore all that Detroit Public Schools High Schools has to offer before the spring Enrollment period.

The Open House Series showcased the exciting array of high school offerings for parents/guardians and students to tour, including the two single-gender academies (Detroit International Academy for Young Women and Douglass Academy for Young Men); language immersion programs, such as those offered at Academy of the Americas, which expanded to a new high school site in Southwest Detroit; and construction trades programs, available at A. Philip Randolph Technical High School.

Other options included Dr. Benjamin Carson High School of Science and Medicine and the Medicine and Community Health Academy at Cody, which offer medical pathways; Detroit Collegiate Preparatory High School at Northwestern, which has comprehensive partnerships with Johns Hopkins and other institutions; and Detroit School of Arts, the metro region’s premier musical and performing arts high school.

The fairs were part of a series of Enrollment initiatives to both increase retention rates among DPS families and invite new families to see the school choices available in DPS.

Across the District, we are very excited to be planning a new school year for our students.

Our Academic Plan is centered on excellence defined by:

  • A high-quality, well-rounded educational experience;
  • Strong relationships;
  • High-quality effective educators, administrators and support staff.

Importantly, the Safe Routes to School initiative with the DPS Police Department and community volunteers is expanding to cover every route to and from school that requires attention to ensure safe walking and bus routes each morning and afternoon.

Please take the time to review the programs listed in this guide. Included are all of our exceptional high schools DPS offers. Many are now accepting enrollment for available seats starting Fall 2016.
