Pistons Legend Rick Mahorn and the Detroit Pistons Foundation hosted the 11th Annual Black History Month event and scholarship competition on Tuesday, February 9, at The Palace of Auburn Hills. The event invites Michigan high school seniors the opportunity to compete for a combined total of $55,000 in college scholarships.
Local high school seniors, one chosen by each participating high school, presented an original interpretation of the contest theme, Embracing Diversity, in front of fellow classmates, teachers and a panel of community leader judges for scholarships toward higher education. Through a chosen artistic medium (speech, poem, dance, music, etc.) contestants shared the effect diversity has on everyday life.
Senior, Bre’Ona Law-Williams of Detroit International Academy for Young Women, was awarded a Microsoft Surface tablet, a Tim Horton’s gift card, Pistons Tickets, and the grand prize, a $25,000 scholarship. Bre’Ona plans to attend Marygrove College in the Fall.
