Cass Tech is riding a streak of five consecutive Detroit Public School League girls’ volleyball championships and senior captain Nicole White has been part of the last three.

In her fourth year as a varsity starter, White is again at the heart of the Technicians’ title aspirations and has been named PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week.

CASSKINGVOLLEYBALL 009 (2)“As the setter, Nicole is essentially the quarterback of the team,” Cass Tech coach Ramona Cox said. “The other players look to her as a leader both on and off the court.”

In six matches of the PSL tournament Sept. 26 at University of Michigan-Dearborn, White had 59 assists to average just a fraction under 10 assists per game. She also had 30 aces for a 5-per-game average.

In a pair of league victories, White had 12 assists, nine aces and one kill against Pershing and 11 assists and two kills against Denby.

“She has gotten better over her volleyball career in identifying the tendencies of other teams and she makes playing decisions accordingly,” Cox said. “I have grown to trust her decisions. She’s allowed to make choices based on what she sees.  She’s also an aggressive server. The team relies on her consistent serving for us to score.”

White also excels in the classroom and is a member of the National Honor Society.

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
