Western International senior Jade Martinez is the only returning player from last year’s team that reached the Detroit Public School League girls’ volleyball semifinals and made a postseason run with three victories before losing in the district finals.

“With her being the only experienced player, she’s been like having another coach for our younger players,’’ Cowgirls’ coach Brenda Henry said of Martinez, the Detroit Public School League’s Proud Strong Learner of the Week, the first girl honoree in 2015-16.

Jade Martinez“She’s all of 5-feet-2 and plays outside hitter, which makes her unique because she’s not that tall,” Henry said. “But she can jump out the gym.

“We had seven seniors graduate, but Jade is a three-year starter and our captain. She understands we’re rebuilding and she remains positive and supportive of her new teammates. She exhibits her leadership every day.”

Martinez also exhibited her efficiency in a 25-10, 25-15, 25-19 victory against DIA, accounting for 12 digs, eight aces and three kills.

The Detroit Public School League Proud Strong Learner of the Week award is representative of the league’s top boys’ and girls’ athletes. The award is presented by the DPS Office of Athletics and is sponsored by Detroit-area McDonald’s owner-operators
