East English Village senior Lindrell Mitchell had 187 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ 56-20 season-opening nonleague victory last Thursday against Walled Lake Central and has been named the Detroit Public School League’s first Proud Strong Learner of the Week for 2015-16.
Mitchell, a 5-11, 165-pound starting wide receiver and backup free safety, caught three passes for 114 yards, including an 84-yard TD. He also scored on a 17-yard run and returned a kickoff 56 yards for a TD.
“He’s a third-year starter, a fourth-year varsity player and a two-year team captain,’’ East English Village coach Rod Oden said. “He’s fearless catching passes across the middle of the field and he does a lot of the dirty work. He blocks very well. Even though he doesn’t receive much credit for it, a lot of our long runs come because of his blocks on second and third-level defensive backs.”
Oden said Mitchell’s ability to take advantage of limited pass-catching opportunities is a perfect complement to the Bulldogs’ run-oriented offense.
“We only threw the ball six times against Walled Lake Central and that can be frustrating for a good receiver, but he wants to see team success,” Oden said. “Because of our running game being the way it is, he’s had to make the most of his opportunities. He’s a top-notch receiver but he’s a guy who submits to the needs of the team.”
Mitchell is attracting interest from college recruiters. “He has a 3.7 (grade point average) and scored 21 on the ACT, so he’s already a (college scholarship) qualifier,’’ Oden said. “He’s not committed yet, but he has a couple of Division 2 offers and we’re currently waiting on some of the MAC (Mid-American Conference) schools to make decisions.”
Other nominees for the PSL Proud Strong Learner of the Week were Osborn junior running back Juan Thomas, who had 20 carries for 180 yards and two touchdowns – along with 12 tackles and an interception defensively – in the Knights’ 44-6 nonleague victory against Windsor Lajeunesse; and Western International junior quarterback K’lari Sweeney, who completed eight of 14 passes for 160 yards and two touchdowns – and made 10 tackles at linebacker – in the Cowboys’ 28-0 victory against Central.
