In support of Wayne World Class Education Initiative and to acquire new partnerships for the upcoming school year and beyond, over 165 former students, teachers and administrators from the ’40’s, ‘50’s, ‘60’s, and ‘70’s were invited to Wayne Elementary School on Friday, May 15. Guests came from all as far as Florida to stroll the halls of their youth.
One former student from the ‘50’s Alice Franckowiak said, “the current building Principal, Pamela Askew, was a delightful woman who spoke about making Wayne a place of learning, a safe place, and family-oriented for the children of Detroit.”
Here is what others thought of their experience back down memory lane!
“Wonderful stroll down memory lane tonight. It was amazing how small our school looked. The library seemed so small; as did the gym and auditorium. That stage that I was so fearful of falling off of, is not much more than thigh high. Those that came had a once in a lifetime experience. Wayne School still looks good at 85 years old!” Par O’Neill Pehrson
“What a wonderful time I had at Wayne School. It was great seeing so many familiar faces. I felt like I was back in time at school. Thanks to everyone who put this together.” Connie Bitsicas Krzesak
“One of my absolute favorite memories from last night was speaking with the most delightful Ms. Dorr, who I had for sixth grade. I was nearly brought to tears when she remembered being in the backseat of my parents’ car with me on our way downtown for the city spelling bee. She said she also remembered the wonderful luncheon at the Book Cadillac Hotel that day. Unbelievable! What a FABULOUS evening sharing such WONDERFUL memories and ways to help the school with so many old friends.” Mary Sue Pelgus
